(Acts 8:30,31,35 NIV) Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet.  “Do you understand what you are reading?”  Philip asked.  “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”  So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him… Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

It seems as if almost daily we need to explain something to someone else.  Parents, you are always answering the question, “Why?”  Husbands, you have more than likely had to explain to your wife how to get somewhere or the rules of football game that you are watching.  Wives, you have no doubt had to explain to your husbands how a vacuum works or how to turn the oven on.  And teenagers, you probably have had to explain to your parents how their IPod works, how to operate the new remote, or to use the computer.  At times, we all have to explain things to others, or have things explained to us.

And the man from our above verses was no different than you and me.  He needed something explained to him.  He was riding along, reading the Scriptures, and he didn’t understand what he was reading.  And so Philip came to him, a complete stranger, and sat with him.  Philip explained to him what he was reading and told him the good news about Jesus!  How awesome is that!

And you are just like Philip.  No, you probably don’t know the Bible as well as Philip or how to answer Biblical questions like Philip, but like Philip you do know how to explain the greatest news the Bible has in it – the news of Jesus!   You know the great message that Jesus died on the cross to save you and the world from their sins and that He rose from the grave conquering sin, death, and the devil giving you and those who cling to Him eternal life in heaven.  You know this amazing message and the Holy Spirit has given you the knowledge and ability to explain the good news of Jesus just like Philip. By the grace of God you have been given the faith that believes the same great news as Philip, as the apostles, the disciples, and the prophets.  And just like them you have been given the ability to share the great message of Jesus!

And because of the faith which the Holy Spirit has given you, you can daily explain the simple message of what Jesus has done for you and the world to your children, to your wife, to your husband, to your friends, and when given the opportunity explain this great news to strangers – to those who do not understand or know what Jesus has done for them.   Because as Peter says in Acts 4:12, “… for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”  You know this name, the name of Jesus, and because of Him you have eternal life in heaven!  And so because of what Jesus has done for you, go and share His name and explain to all what He has done for them!

By the grace of God able to share and explain the good news of Jesus to all, just like you,

Pastor Schumann
