Romans 1:17 “For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Notice, it doesn’t say, “The righteous will live by works.”  Nor does it say, “The righteous will live because they’ve been good people.”  Rather, God says that the righteous will live by faith.  By faith in what?  By faith in what Jesus has done for us!  By trusting that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection really did do all that was necessary for my salvation!  In other words, salvation is a free gift from a gracious God.

It was this passage of the Bible through which God convinced Martin Luther that God had saved him.  Luther had been taught – by the church, no less – that salvation was something you had to earn from God.  He lived in a state of torment.  God put that torment to rest, convincing Luther that the church was teaching incorrectly, that salvation was really a free gift from God.  Luther said that it was as if the gates of heaven had been thrown open for him when God convinced him of this wonderful truth.

And thank God, he told others about it, so that others could have the same wonderful assurance which was now his.  We thank God that he told others, because through the years, those truths have come down to you and to me.  Yes, YOU’RE saved by the work of Jesus.  Yes, YOUR salvation is 100%, complete.  Yes, the gates of heaven are open for you!  Yes, you can say with confidence, “I WILL go to heaven, because Jesus lived, died and rose for me.”

And that changes everything.  No matter how good – or how poorly – my life is going, I have a firm foundation underneath me.  I AM going to heaven.  It’s for sure, because the righteous will live by faith.  You HAVE that foundation!  Thank God!

Thankful to know I’m going to heaven, just like you,
