(1 Corinthians 6:19b-20 NIV) …You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body.

When you go to the grocery store and buy food there is an exchange that takes place – money for food.  Before you pay that food is not yours, it is something that you cannot eat, something that you cannot have, and it is something you cannot do anything with until you buy it.  But once you give your money to the clerk then you can do whatever you want with your groceries because you now own them.  You can eat them right away, you can give them away, or if you so choose you could throw them away.  You could treat those groceries any way you want.

Unfortunately, we often times take this same mentality and apply it to our bodies.  We often think that our bodies are our own.  And since we own our bodies we can treat them any way we want.  And so we abuse them by getting drunk, by having sexual relations outside of marriage, by being lazy, by doing drugs, and so on.  We think that since we own our bodies we can do whatever we want to them.

But here’s the kicker… We don’t own our bodies.  As Saint Paul tells us in the above verse, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” Somebody bought you and me and he purchased and won us from all of our sins, from death, and from the power of the devil.  And what did this man pay for us?  He did not pay dollars or even silver or gold but he paid for us with his holy precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death.  And why did he do this?  He did it all that we should be his own.  Jesus bought you and me from the devil so that we could be his precious sons and daughters.

Our bodies are not our own but they belong to our precious Savior Jesus.  And out of thanks and love for what he has done for us we strive every day to use our bodies to his glory.  And how do we use our bodies to his glory?  We do it every day by following his commands, avoiding temptation, and using our bodies in holy and pleasing ways.  And why do we use our bodies to glorify our God?  Because of what Jesus has done for us!

Bought buy Jesus’ precious blood just like you,
